Introduction (2008)
Not exactly a significant contribution to the vocabulary of the taxonomies of emergence, but an intriguing sidebar marker along the trail of the controversial words for … whatever we’re calling it now. And since I just happened to use this word in a silly-fun comment today, it seems appropriate to drag this draft on out and publish it as a post.
“Memergence” – the Perfect Title for Emerging Churchdom … (2004)
I have at last devised the perfect title for emerging churches. It is “memerging” – and if you already get why that’s perfect, sorry, but I’ll go ahead and explain for those who don’t. “Meme” is the technical term for “cultural DNA,” so memerging and memergence make sense for new kinds of churches that strive for different contexts of culture.
Okay, cool … but what I find ironic is that I didn’t really totally invent this word from thinking about it. It showed up on my screen as I was typing an article about paradigm shifts in gathering structures among [m]emerging churches. However, once typed, it was recognizeable as a neo-logism, I believe.
Name it and claim, I rarely say.
Actually, some of my best words are the result of typoes and speakoes. Like when I get really tired and start stammering when I talk. That was the source of “eblaborations” and “malipulate.” Oh, and don’t forget “responsibiblity.”
So, now that we have the definitive term in Memerge, Memergent, Memergence, what shall we conquer next?!
