“Do Good Plus Do No Harm” Curriculum Project ~ Milestone Update

I spent much of January writing my final case study on which Field Guide #1 in my curriculum project is based. I also got all the completed chapters and other pieces lined up, and figured out what’s left to do. The really good news is that it looks to be 95% done! Here’s what’s left to produce, with finalizing the text after that:

  • 1 chapter to write part of, then 7 chapters to edit for consistency with the rest of the book.
  • 2 interviews to conduct and transcribe. (I’m keeping the names under wraps for now, but these individuals are very insightful on dealing with systemic abuse and recovery.)
  • 4 short case studies to write (3 movies, 1 historical), and 3 more to edit.
  • Finalize the list of add-on items: posters, worksheets, trading cards with the concepts and illustrations, etc.

I’m very thankful to be almost done, and for the prayers, encouragement, and support of friends along the way!

Starting February 2nd, I will be completing a grant proposal for a client, then I’ll be back at it with Field Guide #1 as soon as I can to finish it. After it’s done, I’ll likely be taking an extended break from social media and blogging on any new topics, as I arrange for next steps in publishing of Field Guide #1, update the companion website [Futuristguy’s Field Guides] with detailed tables of contents and additional resource bibliographies, and launch into Field Guide #2.

OVERVIEW ~ “DO GOOD PLUS DO NO HARM”

Course One: Deconstruction of Sick Systems

Field Guide #1: Systemization. Figuring out toxic systems: identifying systemic abuse and deconstructing systems that harm.

  • Orientation to the entire curriculum series.
  • Basics of organic and organizational systems
  • Basics of systemic abuse.
  • Key identifiers for malignant leaders and their toxic systems.
  • How to analyze abusive systems and assess issues related to responsibility and accountability.

Field Guide #2: Detoxification. Dealing with a toxic past and present: surviving abuse, providing advocacy, planting activism, remediating (repairing) damage done by individuals and institutions.

  • How authoritarians steal our stories with their social experiments and controlling organizations.
  • Destructive impacts of trauma and terror, in terms of psychological damage and repression of freedom.
  • How abuse survivors find resilience and recovery.
  • How advocates and activists resist evil and amplify redemptive change.
  • Remediation (repairing of damage; making things right) and dealing with malignant leaders and toxic systems.

Course Two: (Re)Construction of Healthy Systems

Field Guide #3: Transformation. Mapping out paradigms, problems, and healthier possibilities: using paradigm systems and strategic foresight to choose and move toward a preferable future.

  • A paradigm system framework for identifying toxic versus trustworthy enterprises.
  • Systemic problems of toxicity versus health, and how to plot a transformational course forward.
  • Perceptions and perspectives drawn from learning styles and cultural styles.
  • Preferable pathways into the future: story arcs and trajectories of transformation.
  • Creating “The Zone” of common ground for the common good, and overcoming culture-based conflicts.

Field Guide #4: Engagement. Setting up spaces that empower: compositing transformation ventures and measuring their social impact.

  • Building up colleagues through identifying complementary strengths among your peers and participants.
  • Compositing transcultural (intercultural) teams for catalyzing social action.
  • Connecting association networks for supporting project partnerships and collaborations.
  • Designing and developing robust, holistic social enterprise projects.
  • Measuring follow-through of “quadruple bottom line” impact (community, ecology, economy, spirituality).

    • Thanks Andy — I like the two-part approach as well, and the reason for putting the supposedly negative stuff first is that people don’t tend to get that message *before* doing a start-up or church plant or major organizational transition. So, they may in fact be setting things up for *unavoidable* toxicity, despite all good intentions to have a positive transformational impact. Prevention is so much easier than intervention …
